Blancorexia: the obsession with white teeth

We all want a healthy, white smile, as aesthetic as possible. Since the white color of the teeth is associated with good hygiene and oral health.

In order to achieve aesthetic and perfect teeth, we frequently go to check-ups, and when necessary, to whitening in our trusted dental clinic.

The problem comes when achieving a white tone on the teeth becomes obsession and the patient never sees his teeth as white enough, he always needs more. This obsession is called whiteorexia.

What is whiterexia?

As we have already mentioned before, it is the obsession with having increasingly whiter teeth, using aggressive treatments. These treatments are used incorrectly without the supervision of a dentist.

Patients who suffer from whiteness often have an erroneous perception of the tone of their teeth, always perceiving them to be darker. This condition is totally psychological and can create great insecurity in patients regarding their smile.

The factors that most affect patients with whiterexia are:

  • Smiles “Hollywood”: patients often notice the smiles of celebrities and want to achieve the same nuclear target. But many times they are not aware that these celebrities usually wear veneers and have not exposed their natural teeth to aggressive treatments to whiten them.
  • The continuous advertising bombardment of miracle products to obtain a white smile does not help to remedy this obsession either. It is promised to obtain a dazzling smile without dental supervision, which causes the patient to abuse them and damage their oral health.

  • dental hypersensitivity
  • Gum Irritation
  • Gingivitis
  • Loss of tooth enamel
  • Tooth loss

To avoid falling into the myth that healthy teeth are completely white, the best thing we can do as patients is go to an expert. This will inform us if we have adequate hygiene and the health of our teeth. When we go to the dentist, we can also consult him about what would be the ideal shade for our teeth and obtain more information about the non-invasive treatments available.

To achieve your ideal white tone and avoid at all costs ending up suffering from white fever, we recommend:

  • After whitening, respect the time set by the dentist to achieve the best result without damaging the enamel.
  • Avoid at all costs the miracle products that you see promoted on social networks or the internet, they are not usually safe.
  • Avoid using homemade recipes to whiten your teeth. In general, people mix baking soda and lemon without being aware that they can damage their gums and enamel.
  • If you have any questions, contact your trusted dentist and always follow their instructions.

At Dental Corbella we have the best aesthetic treatments. We only carry out whitening with the Philips Zoom brand, because after years of experience we have been able to verify that it offers the best results while maintaining a healthy smile.
