Interproximal caries: characteristics, diagnosis and treatment.

At Dental Corbella we are aware that one of the main concerns of our patients is the appearance of cavities. For this reason, we always seek to guide you with the care of your mouth and inform you about how to avoid them.

A type of cavities that usually affects many patients are interdental or interproximal cavities. This type of cavities is usually more dangerous than those that appear in molars.

Interproximal cavities They form in the space between adjacent teeth. They tend to be more complicated to detect, since in their beginnings they cannot be perceived with the naked eye.

In many cases, if the patient does not go to the dental clinic frequently and neither check-ups nor cleanings are performed, interproximal cavities will not be detected in time and will spread.

Symptoms:

  • Tooth sensitivity.
  • Pain.
  • Halitosis.
  • Loss of tooth color.

Diagnosis:

In order to ensure that the patient suffers from interproximal cavities, the dentist will perform an oral x-ray and dental examination. This way, you will be able to detect interdental cavities in time and treat them.

Treatment:

For interproximal cavities there are two types of treatments; without intervention and with intervention.

Treatment without intervention:

If interproximal cavities are detected in time, the dentist will recommend that the patient maintain better dental care, so they can control the cavities and eliminate them.

To maintain better dental care, it will be necessary for the patient to brush their teeth properly, floss and go to the clinic every six months for a dental cleaning.

Treatment with intervention:

If interproximal cavities are not detected in time and are very widespread, an examination should be performed. endodontics. In this treatment, the dentist will remove the damaged part of the tooth(s) due to cavities and will proceed to perform a reconstruction so that the tooth looks as natural as possible.
