Possible causes of toothache

Toothache is one of the most common oral diseases. Therefore, a large number of consultations at the dentist are related to this problem. It is a pain that can be very intense, even extending to the ears or neck area. For people who suffer from it, it is a constant pain that worsens at some point and directly affects their daily lives. Many affected people wonder what is the best way to deal with this problem, or if there is a pill to reduce or eliminate it.

Due to all this, it is important to understand what causes toothache and how to treat it, and in this post we are going to explain it to you in detail.

What exactly is toothache?

Toothache originates when the pulp in the center of the tooth becomes inflamed. This usually happens if you have cavities, which are small cracks or holes in your teeth. Another possible cause may be having received certain dental treatment.

Toothache can also be caused by various causes, some even not directly related to the teeth.

What are the most common causes of toothache?

Tooth decay is the main reason for toothache. It usually originates when we find ourselves with poor hygiene or excessive consumption of sugars, which cause the proliferation of bacteria in the mouth that adhere to the tooth surface. The bacteria present in plaque produce an acid that can pierce the enamel of the teeth and, through this, reach the hard tissue underneath. The stimulus of cold or heat, the consumption of sugary drinks or the rubbing of a toothbrush causes unpleasant pain to appear. Sometimes cavities can be seen with the naked eye as brown or white spots, but in many cases they cannot be easily seen because they are located in non-visible parts of the tooth.

Other causes are: injury or trauma to the tooth, damaged or fractured tooth, dental work, teeth grinding, repetitive movements, third molars, biting an object...

In some cases, impacted wisdom teeth cause problems. There is a possibility of redness and inflammation around the area where the tooth is located, as well as pain in the jaw, headache and a strange taste when biting near the affected tooth. Additionally, they cause pain in the jaw and swelling around it. Sometimes there is inflammation in the cheek and ear pain, difficulty opening the mouth completely and discomfort when eating and chewing.
