Treatment for dental phlegmon

Dental phlegmon is one of the most common ailments when it comes to oral problems. It has its origin in the infection of the tooth tissues, which in turn causes inflammation of the gum and causes great pain in that area.

One of the most common reasons for phlegmon to appear is cavities. But it is also likely that they have their origin in poor hygiene or due to complications derived from dental treatments that have taken place previously.

Dental phlegmons are very easily identified due to the severe pain they cause in those who suffer from it, which increases when making effort when eating or chewing, and because of the inflammation that usually causes in the gum and which can spread. all over the jaw. It is also common for it to cause bad breath and even affect a few tenths of fever and headache.

The main complication of dental phlegmon may be linked to the spread of inflammation throughout our body, more specifically in the neck and head area. It is mainly due to the fact that when we present this pathology our immune system weakens and we can harbor other types of pathologies.

Because of this, dental phlegmons are especially worrying in patients who have some type of additional disease, such as asthma or diabetes.

Treatment against dental phlegmon

Generally, the pain caused by dental phlegmon is not easily bearable. For this reason, there are many cases of this type of pathology that we can find in the waiting rooms of dental clinics.

It is recommended that we go to a dental clinic as quickly as possible as soon as we notice symptoms compatible with this problem. The main reason for this is to try to avoid complicating the diagnosis.

Thanks to this, the specialist will be able to analyze the real origin of the phlegmon and will carry out a specific treatment against the infection. Otherwise, in which the phlegmon has not been treated appropriately, it will reappear repeatedly.

The dentist's action against him can be divided into two different phases:

In a first consultation, the specialist will prescribe antibiotics in order to eliminate the infection and anti-inflammatories in order to make the pain and swelling disappear.

In the second consultation, the effect achieved with the treatment of the first consultation will be analyzed and a new procedure will be carried out, if necessary. What would result in the process to eliminate phlegmon is no longer solely pharmacological, since the real cause of phlegmon must be attacked directly.

This procedure may be a root canal treatment with the goal of preserving a tooth that would otherwise have been extracted.

Endodontics is, in turn, the most feasible treatment in the event that we are faced with irreversible dental pulpitis. Although we must keep in mind that this should be done once the swelling has completely disappeared.

In turn, if the dentist determines that it is advisable to perform an extraction because the case is severe, we must completely control the swelling beforehand. The consequence is that a tooth cannot be extracted while there is an infection in the gum.

Prevention to avoid suffering from phlegmon

The only prevention that we must take into account is to be constant when it comes to oral health. In addition to visiting the dentist frequently, every six months, we ensure that, if there is a previous pathology, we can detect it in time.
